In My Thoughts!

{May 3, 2007}   Essay Final Exam

Before this English class, I had no idea as to what blogging was. I had heard about blogging a couple of times before but I did not have a clue as to what it really was. Blogging has risen to its highest. This is obvious since an English class is using it for various reasons. So when we were told to create one I was a little concerned. In my head, I was thinking that it would be hard and that there would be no possible way I would be able to keep up. But that all changed as soon as my blog was created.

One of the aspects that worked for me was that it was very simple to use. The website was easy to navigate. After doing our first example blog, everyone got the hang of it.

Using Word Press made it very convenient and very conductive to my learning. For example, if I missed class or was not paying attention at all; going to the  website rhetoricallyspeaking.wordpress.com made it easy to see what all we did in class that day. Every thing that we had to do or know would be posted as a blog.

As I begin to think about what aspects did not work for me, I really cannot think of any. Besides being the way that I am, sometimes everything just works for me. I’m not really the type who complains. If it has to do with school then everything works for me.

One aspect that I would like to change is really something that is not that big a deal. I would like to change the variety of backgrounds or themes. The very little themes that they offered are in my opinion boring and not to mention plain. Not much thought was put when designing them. Also when trying to change the background on my blog, it was kind of hard to get to it to change it. So in a way, I would make it easier for people to be able to change their chosen theme anytime they would desire too. And I would add more themes on there. Some of the themes that I would add a person could be able to relate too; whether by colors or designs.

Personally, if I had to continue blogging for academic reasons than that would not be a problem at all; in a way I liked the idea of turning in work through a blog. Now after a whole semester of blogging on wordpress.com, it’s easy and sometimes interesting depending on what it is that we are doing or even talking about. Doing a blogging just because, I simply do not think that I would keep up with it. Because of the fact that in a way it is similar to a diary, it makes it a bit too much for me. And maybe if I did not have a busy life, then I would probably think about it. Who knows though, I might change my mind and start blogging when I get bored. It is not a bad deal.

One of the aspects that worked for me was that it was very simple to use. The website was easy to navigate. After doing our first example blog, everyone got the hang of it. Another aspect that definitely was convenient for us as the student. What I am trying to say is, let’s say we were having a little trouble starting on our assignment and did not have a clue as to how to get started or in what format to do it. All that anyone had to do was check out another students page to get a hint as to how to do our own work. This in my opinion was a major help everyone.

Using Word Press made it very convenient and very conductive to my learning. For example, if I missed class or was not paying attention at all; going to the  website rhetoricallyspeaking.wordpress.com made it easy to see what all we did in class that day. Every thing that we had to do or know would be posted as a blog. Even though, at times we did use digital drop box. Other than that every thing else was okay.

As I begin to think about what aspects did not work for me, I really cannot think of any. Besides being the way that I am, sometimes everything just works for me. I’m not really the type who complains. If it has to do with school then everything works for me.

{April 26, 2007}   Essay Exams Blog 2
  1. Since we have been using Ashley X as an example for everything, is there a posibility that our essay exam be based on that topic?
  2. When grading our essay exams, what will you be looking for, what criteria is needed to get a decent passing grade?
  3. Will we know the topic of our final exam ahead of time to be able to get prepared, and will you have a certain amount of pages that you would want us to have written?

{April 25, 2007}   Essay Exams Blog 1

From the reading I have learned that the most important thing about writing any essay whether as an exam or a plain essay, is that you have to understand the question being asked very well. Also another factor that can help me in writing a well written essay is by applying a theory or method that I have learned, making a plan and before anything analyzing the question being asked.

My biggest problem when taking an essay exam is thatg I tend to worry whenever I read the question, and I also get nervous ans start thinking about how I am goin to write. Basically waste time. But on page 722 it states that if I panic when a test I should make a deal with myself and re-read the question and block out the things that I do not have to consider.

{April 24, 2007}   Why I hate Essay Exams

Why I hate essay exams! As we all know as soon as any english teacher says it time for an essay, we all as students moan and groan. We do this for a reason wether you know it or not.  Basically the idea of writing an essay in class and  knowing that it is  an exam, well its make it meven more difficulty to concentrate and figure out how you will write  a good essay in short period of time. But in my case i hate writing essays and especially in class because it always takles me a while to even get started on anything. Writing has never been one of my subjects so its makes  it even harder  when I know that I have tried but still it is not enough to get the desire grade that i would want to get. When it comes to writing it takes me a while to even know how I am going to put it together.  In high school  writing was never made a big deal, well it was but in classes we would begin to write and then stop, our papers would get graded but we would all pass. So now that I am in college I now learned that it is more dificult, and if I want to do my best I am going to

Immigration is it really that big a major concern in Texas? Well according to state legislatures in Texas, Immigration has become a major concern since it blew up in the national scene two years ago. According to Pres. Bush the issue of immigration stirs emotions as those seen by Americans on display on major streets, where people protest this issue. Immigration whether we like or not will always be an issue, as we all know, it has been here since the beginning of time. If we want to secure our borders then we need to have better plans, strategies etc. Stopping immigration will take a lot of effort put into it. For example, those complaining about can help and try to stop it instead of just standing on corners protesting. As they can see it did not get them anywhere.

Those arguments made by state legislatures in Texas, follow other arguments that can be used to counter argue the issue. According to President Bush, for decades the border of Mexico and Texas has not had complete control of its borders. This results in many Mexican citizens sneaking across the border in hope for looking for a better life. Also there have been many complains that immigrants increase the crime rate or lower our government budget by not paying taxes. But in fact in an address made by the President once again he stated that “illegal immigrants once here live in the shadows of our society. Many use forged documents to get jobs”. Illegal immigrants never hurt anybody; it is really that drastic for them to be painted as parasites that weaken our community as said by a state republican legislature?

1.Who is your specific audience?

My specific audience intended for  this paper is basically the Latinos and anyone for or against the controversial  issue of Immigration. Wether people with illegal immigrants in their family, relatives, friends and even those who oppose it in every way.  This specific topic affects everyone of us in the U.S. in different ways, especially those states close to the Mexican border.

2.Why did you choose them?

I decided who my specific audience would be by reasoning and much knowledge of the topic. Mainly latinos legal or illegal in the states of Texas, California, Arizona and New Mexico are deeply affected. Immigration today is a major issue and it was recently made more of a big deal in the last couple of years.

3.How will your audience affect the argument you intend to present?

Well most importantly my audience will already have their own opinions and emotions on how they feel about Immigration. So with this said it is simply easy to say that I would really have to be in a way careful with whatever it is that i will say. Have a more not so harsh approach.

4.Which fallacies will you need to focus on keeping from your argument? Why are these (individually) important to consider in  your argument

  • Post Hoc, Ergo Propter Hoc-
    • Immigration has always been a part of the american culture, but just recently it was made a big deal to the people of the U.s.
  • Hasty Generalizations
    • It been here since the begining of time and it will never go away no matter what.
  • False Analogy
    • The 700 fence built along the mexican border will stop immigration from occuring. False. When there is a will there is a way
  •  Ad Hominem
    • Immigration does not raise the crime rate, instead you hear about bodies found near the borders of immigrants

{March 8, 2007}   Growth Attenuation

A major issue coming to a rise, but it is really that necessary to give children the hormone pill to stop growth? Even though a person’s child might have a disability of any sort, why would anyone want to keep their child a smaller size. If the man who created us wanted us to be small he would have made us small. Parents make the choice only to make their lifes easier, and like the articel said parents ”Having devoted much of their lives to meeting the basic daily needs of their child, many find themselves forced to find out-of-home placements for their son or daughter.” And now a days especially women if they do not like a specific part of their body they change it by getting plastic surgery done, so why not go ahead with that procedure. But before going through with it parents should really think about the consequences, and if it is moraly right.

Immigration today is such a big deal, when in reality it is not! Well thats just my opinion. There are other more important issues out there that need to be focused on. This specific topic can definitely be narrowed down. So many arguments can come about.  “Throughout our history, the dreams and hard work of immigrants have been a driving force behind America’s success as a strong, prosperous nation. We need the continued contributions of these immigrants to grow and remain competitive. ” If this is so then why, just why do the “white American people of the United States complain.  Well I would have to say is because they are “racist”!!! At least that is what it looks like. Who arethe ones doing the jobs that they do not want to do? Who do they hire to do those jobs? Those who do all of that are just hipocrits. Another thing that I do not understand is why they only focuse on HISPANIC OrMEXICAN IMMIGRANTS???? There are so many other Illegal Immigrants here from other countries, but you do not here about raids going on in chinese, iranian, russian, yugoslavian, etc. places of work and living communities.  “We’re adding infrastructure to make the cities secure as well as the rural parts of our border secure,”.  Secure? When have you heard about immigrants being violent to others. Now on the other hand you hear about immigrants being murdered for no reason at all just because they were trying to have a better life in the U.S.

So with that said my topic can be narrowed down to only speaking on :

  • why only focusing on mexican immigrants
  • only come to work where lazy  U.S. citizens including minorities won’t becuase minimun wage is only offered.
  • why was this made a huge deal in the past couple of years
  • how does this effect the state we live in, Texas

Are you writing on an issue that is actually controversial?

Immigration is truly a controversial issue in the U.S. It is actually a major issue that in my opinion does not have to be.

Are you conscious of both sides of the argument?

I am in fact conscious of both sides of the argument. Even though I do not agree with some of the things that ae going on due to immigration.

Is this a topic that needs to be expanded or narrowed so that you are not burdened with covering information in your essay?

In a way this can be a topic that might be able to be narrowed down, many issues concerning this small issue have arose, some that really do not have to be about for example “the stupid idea of the wall being built” . But in any case it can be narrowed down.
